Ariel Vineyards has been producing dealcoholized wine since 1985 and is widely treated as the category’s proof-of-concept: in 1986 ARIEL Blanc took a gold medal at the Los Angeles County Fair competing against conventional, full-alcohol wines. Ariel is made in Paso Robles, California by the family behind J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines.

The wines are made like traditional wine — including barrel aging for the Cabernet — then the alcohol is gently removed by reverse osmosis to below 0.5% ABV. The focused core lineup (Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay) has kept Ariel a fixture on NA wine shelves for four decades.
