Spokane lost its only fully alcohol-free venue before this guide was written: Patera Temperance Lounge on East Sprague, and The Wet Whistle downtown — the coffee bar that built most of its drinks on Wilderton — have both closed, and both are still listed as open by several current directories. What survives is a set of licensed rooms that treat the category seriously, several of them all-ages. Zola, the live-music bar on Main, expanded its mocktail list under head bartender Sheldon Moore, who has been sober since 2023 and builds them with measured pours and real non-alcoholic spirits rather than juice. Garden Party, a plant shop and bar on South Madison, runs a full mocktail menu and does not check ID at the door. The Boneyard in Spokane Valley is an all-ages lounge whose owner makes the Side Hustle syrup line every drink is built on. Wild Sage prints three named mocktails, Bijou works from house elderflower and lavender syrups and butterfly pea flower tea, and Lunarium on North Monroe keeps a late-night tea and craft-soda list running to midnight with no alcohol on it at all. Portland, ME
Portland punches far above a 550,000-person metro on food and drink, and its alcohol-free scene has real history: Vena's Fizz House opened on Fore Street in 2013 serving nothing but zero-proof drinks, years before the category had a name. That room is gone — Vena's is now a weekday mixer and bitters shop in a converted mill in Westbrook — but the standard it set shows up across the city's bars. The Old Port is the best cluster: Portland Hunt & Alpine Club pours the Paper King on Thai tea syrup and Stappi red bitter soda, Via Vecchia builds an N/A-groni from gentian, cherry bark, grapefruit and juniper over clear ice, and Andy's Old Port Pub keeps non-alcoholic cans alongside house mocktails from 11am to 1am on the working waterfront. Arcadia adds pinball and a Coffee Tonic on nitro cold brew in the Arts District, and RSVP on Forest Avenue is where to buy any of it to take home. The one real gap is the evening: Tandem's two superb cafes close at 1pm and Vena's shuts at five, which leaves Lava Kava on Washington Avenue — Maine's first kava tea bar, open to 10pm nightly — as the only room in the city keeping bar hours without alcohol.

Davie, FL
Davie sits in the middle of Broward County, about nine miles from Fort Lauderdale and twice that from Miami, and its alcohol-free scene looks nothing like either of theirs. There are no dedicated zero-proof cocktail bars here and no non-alcoholic bottle shop — what Davie has instead is one of the densest clusters of kava lounges in South Florida, rooms built around kava root, brewed teas and late hours rather than around mocktails. They open early, run past midnight, and function as the town's version of a bar for people who are not drinking. It is worth knowing what that means before you go: kava is mildly psychoactive, most of these venues also sell kratom, and neither is the same proposition as an alcohol-free cafe — so this is a night out without alcohol rather than a guaranteed sober space. Broader Broward fills the rest of the gap, with named zero-proof lists at Fort Lauderdale restaurants and bars a short drive north.

Easthampton, MA
Easthampton is a mill town of about 16,000 in the Pioneer Valley, and its alcohol-free scene is built around one genuinely unusual business rather than around bar depth. Dry Humor on Union Street is the region's first exclusively non-alcoholic bottle shop — Elizabeth "CJ" Mutti ran it as an online and pop-up operation from May 2023 before opening the retail room in January 2025, and it stocks nothing but zero-proof beer, wine and spirits, canned mocktails and functional drinks. That is the anchor, and it is the reason to make the trip. The rest sits a short walk away on Cottage and Main. Gigantic, Ned King's jewel-box cocktail bar, keeps a real mocktail list including the Dream Defender, a zero-proof take on the Zombie built on passionfruit, pineapple and mint. Calico prints three named mocktails — the Midnight Sun on non-alcoholic tequila, An Orange Lovely, and the Hat Trick — alongside a non-alcoholic golden ale from Kit NA Brewing in Portland, Maine. Both of those are ordinary bars that serve alcohol, so the honest summary is that Easthampton has one fully alcohol-free room and two places that take the zero-proof side of the menu seriously. For a town this size that is more than most cities several times larger manage, and Northampton is three miles north if an evening needs more options.

Kailua-Kona, HI
Kona's alcohol-free anchor is ʻawa — the Hawaiian name for kava, a root the islands have been drinking for centuries and which the state formally recognised as a safe traditional food in 2025. There is no dedicated zero-proof cocktail bar on this coast and no non-alcoholic bottle shop. What there is instead is the real thing, grown here. Kanaka Kava has been open since 2001 in the Coconut Grove Marketplace on Aliʻi Drive, a small open-air room a few steps back from the waterfront, founded by ʻAnakala Zach and carried on by his ʻohana — a Native Hawaiian family business pouring ʻawa from its own farm in coconut-shell cups, with traditional plates of kalua pork, squid lūʻau, poke, ʻuala and poi alongside, and open-mic and live-music nights through the week. Twelve miles up the hill in Captain Cook, Around the Kava Bowl has served fresh Hawaiian and Pacific kava since 2019 from the back of the Hoʻo Hui wellness centre in the old courthouse building, and is the cooler, quieter counterpart for a day when Kona is too hot. Both rooms are fully alcohol-free. Be clear on what that means: kava is not alcohol, but it is psychoactive and mildly sedating, so this is a night out without alcohol rather than a guaranteed sober space.

Nashua, NH
Nashua's alcohol-free scene is one room, and it is a good one. Root Awakening opened at the 300 Main Street Marketplace in 2022 as New England's first kava bar, and it is the only fully alcohol-free evening venue we have been able to verify in the city — there is no zero-proof cocktail bar here and no non-alcoholic bottle shop. Owner Gregory Gately built it after losing his brother to alcohol, and the brief shows in how it runs: open to midnight on weeknights and 1am at weekends, pouring kava from Fiji, Vanuatu and elsewhere in the South Pacific alongside kava lattes, kava mocktails and kombucha on tap, with the week filled the way a neighbourhood bar fills it — movie night on Mondays, trivia on Wednesdays, a darts tournament on Thursdays, karaoke on Fridays — and a games lounge and arcade cabinet where a taplist would otherwise be. It has since opened a second location in Worcester, Massachusetts. One caveat worth stating plainly: kava contains no alcohol but is psychoactive and mildly sedating, and it is not regulated by the FDA, so this is a night out without alcohol rather than a guaranteed substance-free one.

Hilo, HI
Hilo sits on the wet, working side of Hawaiʻi Island, and its alcohol-free anchor is ʻawa rather than zero-proof cocktails. Kava Republic on Keawe Street in downtown Hilo is the fully alcohol-free room here: fresh, locally grown ʻawa and blended "kavatails" alongside coffee, wifi and room to sit, open from nine in the morning until nine or ten at night, with open mic on Thursdays and live music at weekends. That daytime-through-evening span is unusual and more useful than it sounds — it works as a café at eleven in the morning and as a bar at nine at night, which very few alcohol-free rooms manage, and it means the venue is there on the afternoons as well as the evenings. There is no non-alcoholic bottle shop in Hilo and no dedicated zero-proof cocktail bar; the rest of the town's drinking happens in ordinary restaurants and brewpubs.
