Late-Night Cafes With No Alcohol

The room that is still open after the coffee shops close and before the bars empty out. These cafes and tea houses serve no alcohol and stay open until 9pm or later — many until midnight, some past it. We have verified 56 of them across 18 cities, each one checked by a person to be open, with the closing time we found.

Most are Yemeni, Ethiopian, Palestinian or Somali coffeehouses, where a night out has always meant coffee, tea and sweets rather than a bar. A few are tea rooms and matcha bars that simply keep late hours. Every one is listed for the same two reasons: its own verified record says no alcohol is served, and its hours say it is open late.

Why a cafe page on a bar directory

The hardest part of not drinking is rarely the drink. It is that almost everything open at ten o'clock at night is a bar. Coffee shops close at six; restaurants want the table back. For a long time the honest answer to “where can I go tonight that isn't a bar” was: nowhere, or a kava lounge if your city has one.

That has changed, and it changed fast. Yemeni coffeehouses — Haraz, Qahwah House, Qamaria, Arwa and others — grew by half in a single year according to the research firm Technomic, with hundreds more locations in development, and they keep the hours of a bar: open until midnight as standard, later at weekends, sometimes past 3am during Ramadan. Ethiopian and Somali coffee houses have done the same thing for longer with less press. Reporters in Nashville, Los Angeles, Boston and Texas have all described them the same way: a night out without alcohol. Nobody had put them on a map as a category. Now they are on this one.

What to expect: cardamom-spiced coffee and adeni chai in a Yemeni room; a coffee ceremony, roasted in front of you, in an Ethiopian one; pots of oolong or matcha in a tea house; pastries and sweets everywhere; free Wi-Fi more often than not; and no pressure to leave. Nothing on the menu contains alcohol. Some rooms are quiet and some are loud with card games and conversation — the venue pages say which.

Two honest notes. Closing times are the regular hours we verified; Muslim-owned cafes often extend them during Ramadan, so check the venue's own channel before a late trip in that month. And a cafe that serves no alcohol is not the same as a cafe with nothing psychoactive in it — coffee is coffee, and a few rooms also serve kava or functional drinks, which we flag on their pages.
