Vintage Kava is an alcohol-free kava bar on Reems Creek Road in Weaverville, ten miles north of Asheville, and it is larger and more room-like than most in the category — a Main Bar Room, a space called The View, and the Elysium Lounge, with live music and local art throughout. It opens at 9am and runs to midnight, or 1am on Friday and Saturday. Kava flights are offered for anyone wanting to taste across preparations. Its standing locally rests on more than drinks: it hosts the annual Kava Campout, has been recognised by the Town of Weaverville, and served as a gathering space for the community during Hurricane Helene.

Sovereign Kava is North Carolina's first kava bar and a founding piece of Asheville's alcohol-free social scene, open since 2010 — its own slogan is doing its part to keep Asheville weird since then. Its history maps the city's kava scene: Keely Flow and Andrew Procyk left Florida in 2010 to open Vanuatu Kava Bar on South Lexington Avenue, moved to Eagle Street in 2012 as Noble Kava, spent a brief period on Haywood Road in West Asheville in 2015, and settled at 268 Biltmore Avenue in 2017, rebranding as Sovereign Kava around 2019. It sits halfway up the hill between McCormick Field and Mission Hospital, well away from the riverside Biltmore Village that flooded in Helene, and it is dog-friendly and open past midnight. It serves hand-prepared traditional South Pacific ceremonial kava, kava cocktails, kratom and Mitra teas, and local Buchi kombucha. Nightshade is a nightlife venue at 32 Banks Ave #105 in Asheville's South Slope, open Thursday to Saturday evenings, with DJs, live shows and a BASSBOSS sound system, partnered with Plant Bar for plant-based food. It serves genuine zero-proof cocktails — a Matcha Blossom ($12) with matcha, pineapple, sakura and Roots Divino, a Lemon Pop Drop ($11), a Butterfly Gin & Tonic ($12), a zero-proof Old Fashioned ($11) and a Spring No-Jito ($9) — plus a Mertails line crafted by The Nohm. Elevated Kava Lounge's downtown room sits on College Street in the middle of Asheville's bar district and serves no alcohol at all, which is the point — it aims to provide the best kava and other alcohol alternatives in a cosy, artistic setting.
