Deviant Kava

Deviant Kava opened in Parkville, Missouri, at 405 Main Street, and describes itself in one sentence that explains the whole project: it is the result of three friends coming together to bring the sense of community in the kava scene to Kansas City. The room is a booze-free third space designed, in its own words, for people who want something beyond the typical coffee shop or bar — moody lighting, warm wood, and a deliberate mix of bar seating, comfortable chairs and big communal tables so it works for both a solo afternoon and a group. It runs across two floors, and The Pitch, visiting in December 2025, catalogued an upstairs level, a game room and a cosy nook with a fireplace, plus what it called the sweetest front porch and a back patio. The hours are the giveaway that this is built as an all-day room rather than a night-time one: 7am to 10pm Monday through Saturday, from 8am on Sundays.

The drinks split three ways. Traditional kava is the centre — brewed and bottled in house — alongside Leilo kava seltzers in flavours running from raspberry hibiscus and tangerine mango through to a lime margarita and a piña colada. The espresso programme is more serious than a kava bar usually bothers with, built on beans from local roaster Café Corazón: Florida Man layers espresso with orange essence, raw honey, whipped cream, nutmeg and fresh orange zest; Black Velvet works a black sesame simple syrup with vanilla and roasted sesame seeds; Samoan Hotspot pairs Ghirardelli chocolate with a serrano pepper syrup. Zero-proof cocktails round it out, including non-alcoholic negronis and margaritas. Two caveats worth knowing. The venue does not publish prices anywhere online, so the list is priced only in person. And alongside kava it sells kratom drinks — both are psychoactive, and kratom in particular is one that anyone in recovery will want to make a deliberate decision about rather than encounter by surprise.
