Mothership

Mothership is a science-fiction tiki bar and fully plant-based restaurant on 30th Street in South Park, opened in August 2022 by the team behind the vegan restaurant Kindred. The interior is the thing people describe first — an immersive crash-landed spaceship that won an Orchid Award, San Diego's long-running architecture and design prize — and the rum-forward tiki list is the headline draw. What earns the bar a place in this directory is that the zero-proof drinks are not an afterthought bolted onto that: the menu carries a dedicated beverages section in which every drink is labelled zero-proof, built with the same construction logic as the spirited list rather than assembled from juice on request.

The named alcohol-free builds show the work. The X-Ray combines a white cane non-alcoholic spirit with lime, Szechuan peppercorn, spearmint and peppermint oil — a drink with genuine tingle and heat rather than sweetness. The Tracking Device works coconut water and coconut cream against lime and hibiscus. Baby Bird is built on an Italian bitter non-alcoholic spirit with blood orange, caramelised pineapple, lime and soda, which gives a non-drinker access to the bitter-aperitif register that zero-proof menus most often lack. A fourth, the Mindchiller, rounds out the section. Yelp ranked Mothership among its 2023 top twenty-five mocktail spots in the United States. The bar's beverage director, David Kinsey, has described the standard he applies plainly: "For a good alcohol-free drink, I approach it the same way I would a cocktail. It needs to be balanced, have a good nose, solid presentation, and unfold on the palate." That, combined with an entirely plant-based kitchen, makes it one of the few rooms in San Diego where a guest who neither drinks nor eats animal products has the full menu open to them rather than a corner of it.
