Sober Bars in Providence, RI

Rhode Island has no dedicated alcohol-free bar, so Providence's zero-proof drinking happens inside its cocktail rooms — and the good news is that the city's best bar is also its most thoughtful about it. The Eddy, a perennial Best of Rhode Island winner, prints a spirit-free section and marks with an asterisk every cocktail on the main list that can be built without spirit. Persimmon goes further in a different direction, offering any drink on its rotating menu as a neutral counterpart with ingredients swapped role-for-role rather than simply omitted — jalapeño for mezcal, prune juice for sherry. Marcelino's runs a deep mocktail list built on the Lyre's range, Clementine makes an alcohol-free Negroni among its theatrical eight-drink list, and out in Warren, Rhody Roots stocks real non-alcoholic spirits and beers and will build any cocktail without alcohol. The kitchens contribute too: Benjamin Sukle's Oberlin and Gift Horse both mix from house cordials, Gift Horse's local build running on Del's frozen lemonade, while Providence Oyster Bar pours an alcohol-free Italian spritz in the middle of Federal Hill and The George keeps three distinct builds downtown. Down the bay in Newport, Bar 'Cino inverts the usual order entirely, printing its four mocktails as the drinks and charging extra to make them alcoholic.

Bars with serious NA programs in Providence

These bars serve alcohol but run extensive NA programs — meaning the zero-proof side is a real menu, not a Shirley Temple afterthought.

  1. #1 · Extensive NA menu

    The Eddy

    Downtown

    ★★★★?

The Eddy is Providence's most decorated cocktail bar — a perennial Best of Rhode Island winner for Best Cocktail List — and it handles non-drinkers better than any other room in the state. The menu carries a printed spirit-free section, and separately marks with an asterisk every cocktail that can be built without spirit, with the legend spelled out at the foot of the page. Athletic Brewing's non-alcoholic IPA is on the bottle list. Open daily until 1am.

  2. #2 · Extensive NA menu

    Bar 'Cino

    Washington Square, Newport

    ★★★★?

Bar 'Cino is an Italian bar and restaurant on Newport's Washington Square, and it does something almost no other venue does: it prints the mocktails as the drinks, then offers to make them alcoholic for an upcharge. Four year-round non-alcoholic builds sit on the menu at $7 to $12, three of them made from shrubs and fresh juice and one built on the Spiritless range. Open daily from 11:30am.

  3. #3 · Extensive NA menu

    Marcelino's Boutique Bar

    Downtown

    ★★★★?

Marcelino's is a Mediterranean cocktail bar in downtown Providence with one of the deepest non-alcoholic lists in Rhode Island — a full mocktail section built almost entirely on the Lyre's range rather than on juice. The bar makes its own infusions, syrups and dehydrated garnishes from scratch, and the same kitchen work goes into the alcohol-free drinks as the rest of the menu. Sister rooms operate in Boston and the Seaport.

  4. #4 · Extensive NA menu

    Clementine Cocktail Bar

    Downtown

    ★★★★?

Clementine is a theatrical cocktail bar in the centre of Providence, near Trinity Rep, where the drinks arrive with smoke bubbles and perfumed vapour and the list runs to eight tightly-made cocktails. Its non-alcoholic side is properly built rather than tacked on, including an alcohol-free Negroni and two fresh-fruit builds. Open Wednesday to Sunday, until 1am at weekends.

  5. #5 · Extensive NA menu

    Persimmon

    Fox Point

    ★★★★?

Persimmon is a fine-dining restaurant on Hope Street on Providence's East Side, and its bar runs one of the most useful non-alcoholic policies in the state: the rotating cocktail menu can be ordered in a neutral counterpart, with the bartenders swapping ingredient for ingredient rather than simply omitting the spirit. Jalapeño stands in for mezcal, prune juice for sherry. That turns the whole list, not a corner of it, into something a non-drinker can order from.

  6. #6 · Extensive NA menu

    Rhody Roots

    Downtown Warren

    ★★★★?

Rhody Roots on Main Street in Warren keeps a real bank of non-alcoholic spirits and non-alcoholic beers behind the bar — not a token can in the fridge — and will build any cocktail on its list without alcohol. Stocking finished NA spirits and NA beer alongside a make-anything-zero-proof policy puts it among the best-equipped rooms in the state for a non-drinker, twenty minutes down the bay from Providence.

What makes a bar "sober-friendly"?

"Sober-friendly" covers a wider range of venues than people usually realize. On one end: a fully alcohol-free bar where every drink on the menu is zero-proof and the staff is trained around the experience. On the other: a regular cocktail bar with a couple of mocktails listed but a vibe that still revolves around drinking. Both can work, depending on what you need.

What we look for in a 5/5 rating: the entire menu is alcohol-free, the owners explicitly position the space as a non-alcoholic destination, and the staff treats NA drinking as the default rather than the exception. A 4/5 rating goes to bars that serve alcohol but maintain a deep, named NA program — usually with multiple signature mocktails and an NA-spirits section on the back bar.

We don't claim to be a recovery resource — for that, your local AA, NA, or SMART Recovery chapter is the right call. But for anyone choosing not to drink tonight, for any reason, this is the directory you want.
