Arcana Bar and Lounge

Arcana is a dark, low-ceilinged bar in a basement on West Main Street in downtown Durham, with the entrance around the rear of the building. It runs tarot readings alongside the drinks and has built a following as much for the atmosphere as the cocktails, and its non-alcoholic list is structurally serious in a way that is easy to verify: on its own menu, "non-alcoholic" is one of only four sections, sitting level with seasonal and signature, classics and twists, and beer and wine.

That structure is the strongest signal a bar can send about how it treats non-drinkers. A zero-proof drink at Arcana is not a modification of something else or a line at the bottom of the page; it is one quarter of what the bar publishes. The menu index describes the section as inventive cocktails without the booze, and Discover Durham, the city's tourism board, names Arcana in the same breath as The Velvet Hippo for non-alcoholic menus that rival anything with a proof.

The bar keeps late, consistent hours — six until midnight most nights, from five on Friday and Saturday, closed Mondays — and the room is small, so it fills. Access is worth planning for: the entrance is at the rear of the building, and the bar asks that you call ahead if you need the elevator.

Arcana's menu is not readable from its website — the section exists in the navigation but the individual drinks do not render — and the responsible thing is to tell you the programme is real rather than to invent a list.
