304 Brunswick St, Fitzroy VIC 3065
Opened in 2002 and family-run by owner Tash Conte, Black Pearl has spent more than two decades as one of Melbourne's most decorated cocktail bars, a Fitzroy fixture at 304 Brunswick Street that has appeared on the World's 50 Best Bars list (peaking at No. 10 in 2011) and launched a long line of celebrated Australian bartenders. Time Out calls it a bar that has "been a beacon of excellence for decades," while its own team keeps the list "always on the move, keeping step with moods and seasons."
That restless, seasons-led approach is what makes its non-alcoholic offering more than an afterthought. Broadsheet's guide to Melbourne's best non-alcoholic bars highlights Black Pearl for giving its booze-free drinks equal billing with the classics, citing a savoury shaken cocktail built on lacto-fermented tomato, lemon juice, honey, ginger and Lyre's Italian Spritz, alongside brighter fruit-forward mocktails. Non-alcoholic beer from Australian brewer Heaps Normal rounds out the low- and no-options at the bar.
The room itself is classic Fitzroy: a dark, intimate downstairs bar with regulars perched at the counter on quieter nights and a livelier crowd on weekends, plus The Attic, a speakeasy-style space upstairs with table service. It is walk-ins only downstairs, open Wednesday to Sunday from 5pm until 3am.
