Euphorbia has been on Oak Street since September 2014 and is New Orleans' original kava bar. Kava is prepared from the root of Piper methysticum, native to the South Pacific and used ceremonially and socially there for centuries, and the bar's best-selling product remains pure noble kava root served in its most traditional form — known for a calming, anti-anxiety effect without the loss of mental clarity that alcohol brings. Around it the bar builds kava-and-coffee drinks you will not find elsewhere in the city, the standout being the Supermoon, which blends espresso shots with kava. Food is raw, vegan and gluten-free with organically sourced ingredients, and pastries come from La Louisianne. It opens daily from noon to 11pm.
Two things have changed materially here and both matter. First, Louisiana banned kratom: Senate Bill 154 took effect on 1 August 2025, making sale and possession illegal, and kratom had accounted for roughly sixty per cent of Euphorbia's total sales. It is no longer available, which removes a substance many people arriving at a kava bar would otherwise encounter — a genuine improvement in clarity for anyone in recovery, and a serious commercial blow to the business that forced it to broaden what else it sells. Second, what it broadened into is hemp-derived cannabis: the bar stocks Hiatus beverages, which pair 5mg of THC with 125mg of CBD, alongside Crescent 9 and Cheech and Chong drinks and THC/CBD gummies. So kava and THC are both here and kratom is not. No dosage guidance or age policy is published on any page we could reach. One further note for readers weighing the coverage: the business changed hands on 1 August 2025, and the local outlet that has written most enthusiastically about it since is owned by the same person who now owns the bar.
