Haywood Famous

Haywood Famous is a Cuban coffee shop at 508 Haywood Road in West Asheville, opened on 1 August 2024 by Eva Rodriguez-Cué, a first-generation Cuban American who was twenty-three when she launched it. She had left UNC Asheville during the pandemic and built her own hospitality apprenticeship instead, working front and back of house across restaurants and coffee shops before opening her own. The room is designed as a 1960s and 70s gathering space, furnished with vintage pieces, and built around late-night games of dominoes and morning pastelitos. The venue states its position without hedging: it is proud to be a sober community, and it is fully alcohol-free.

What makes it unusual is not that it serves no alcohol — plenty of cafés do — but that it deliberately operates as nightlife. Rodriguez-Cué's reasoning is the clearest articulation of why this category exists that anyone has given in Asheville: her generation, she told Mountain Xpress, is statistically the most sober and the most socially isolated, and she wanted a gathering place for people to get off their phones, off social media, and be with each other. The hours are built for it. Haywood Famous opens at 8am for coffee and then reopens in the evening from 7pm to 10pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so there is somewhere in West Asheville to go at nine at night that is not a bar. The drinks are Cuban coffee done properly — cortaditos, cafecito, café con leche, the Cubano and the colada, which is the shared, sugar-whipped espresso poured into thimble cups and meant to be passed around a table. A rose chai latte covers the non-coffee side. One caveat: the shop does not publish prices online, and its hours have changed since opening, so check the current ones before an evening trip.
