Mesmer Kava

Vermont did not have a kava bar until the middle of May 2025, when Gwen and Roderick Russell opened Mesmer Kava in the Karma Bird House on Maple Street, near the corner of Battery Street and a short walk from the Lake Champlain waterfront. It is the only fully alcohol-free evening venue in a city whose social life otherwise runs almost entirely through breweries, cider houses and cocktail bars — and that scarcity is the point of the listing as much as the drink is.

Kava is made from the ground root of a South Pacific plant, prepared traditionally here and served alongside kava drinks flavoured with pineapple and ginger. The Russells have added herbal teas and a kava-infused hot chocolate to the list since opening. The room is small, the pace is slow, and it is built for conversation rather than turnover: this is somewhere you sit for two hours, not somewhere you stop for one round.

Roderick Russell has been unusually careful about how he describes the effect, telling Seven Days that kava can help smooth the rough edges of your life and that it is mood-altering, not mind-altering. That distinction matters to a substantial part of this site's readership, and it is worth restating plainly: kava is mildly psychoactive. For someone in recovery this is a night out without alcohol rather than a substance-free room, and the difference is theirs to weigh.

The practical detail that makes it work is the hours. Mesmer is open 3pm to 8pm Wednesday through Saturday and from 4:30pm on Tuesday — an evening operation, not a daytime café that happens to lack a licence. Burlington's cafés close mid-afternoon and its bars open at four or five; Mesmer is the one address that covers the early evening without alcohol. Closed Sunday and Monday.

The location helps more than it looks like it should. The Karma Bird House is a converted brick building on Maple Street that houses design studios, non-profits and small creative businesses, so the bar sits inside a working community rather than on a bar strip — the people at the next table are as likely to be finishing a workday as starting a night out. That changes the texture of the room considerably, and it is the reason Mesmer functions as a third place rather than as a novelty stop. For a city where the default invitation is a brewery, having somewhere to say yes to is the whole point.
