Mnemonic Coffee is a queer, women-owned café in Bankers Hill, a short walk from Balboa Park, opened in July 2023 by Gia Giambalvo and Sarah Girdzius — both longtime specialty-coffee professionals who built the place from the outset as a coffee shop and a zero-proof drinks bar at the same time rather than adding the second thing later. The room is 1970s-inspired, it keeps daytime hours from Tuesday through Sunday, and the pastry case comes from Relic Bageri. The coffee side is what you would expect from operators with that background: oat-milk lattes, cold brew and pour-overs done properly.
The reason it belongs here is the other half of the menu. The team builds creative coffee sodas and non-alcoholic cocktails for people who want the communal feel of a café without alcohol — and, just as importantly, without drinking four cups of coffee to justify staying. That second point is an underrated problem: cafés are the default alcohol-free meeting place, and caffeine is a real ceiling on how long anyone can use them. The named builds are genuinely inventive rather than sweet-by-default. The Maple St. layers maple syrup with long pepper and cinnamon under an apple foam, lengthened with Topo Chico. The Soy Libre is the boldest thing on the list, combining Coke and simple syrup with soy sauce, lime and cinnamon — a savoury-saline build that reads strange and works. The Ocean Eyes pairs cardamom with jasmine, and the Zephyr lands somewhere close to an orange cream soda. San Diego Magazine singled the programme out for offering "a zero-proof menu in addition to their lattes, for folks who want to enjoy the communal feel of a café without downing multiple cups of caffeine," which is a fair summary of exactly the gap it fills.
