SAMU Matcha House

SAMU sits at 8 Johnston Street in Collingwood, about ten minutes from Melbourne's CBD, presenting itself as a premium Japanese matcha teahouse and cellar door rather than a cafe in the ordinary sense. Its matcha is sourced direct from Japan and framed around centuries of tea tradition, with the house's own SUKI Grade™ ceremonial tea as the centrepiece. It is completely alcohol-free by design.

The offering splits in two. The cellar door and takeaway counter operate Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 2pm, serving prepared matcha drinks and selling ceremonial-grade tins, scoops and accessories to take home. Separately, formal tea meditations run on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday by appointment only — a seated, guided session led by a trained Japanese Chanoyu expert that includes a welcome drink, a short art presentation, the exclusive SUKI Grade™ matcha and a seasonal Japanese sweet.

Named pours reflect the single-ingredient focus: a ceremonial "This Must Be The Place" matcha, the "4'33" SUKI Grade™ tea made from Kyoto-grown Samidori, Gokou and Asahi cultivars, and "Fear No Tea," a caffeine-free Tochu (Eucommia) matcha alternative for those avoiding stimulants. Every option is prepared without alcohol.

For a sober directory, SAMU is an honest outlier: it leans ceremonial and wellness rather than nightlife, and its daytime hours are limited. But as a place to meet, slow down and share a drink with no alcohol anywhere on site, it functions as a genuine alcohol-free social and ritual space rather than a bar merely tolerating non-drinkers.
