Senia occupies 75 North King Street in Chinatown, a few doors from The Pig & The Lady and a short walk from Lucky Belly, in what has become the most concentrated stretch of serious cooking in Honolulu. It is a fine-dining room by any measure — recognised by The World's 50 Best Discovery and a regular in Hawaiʻi restaurant guides — with a tasting-menu counter alongside the à la carte dining room, and it operates on a restricted schedule of Monday to Saturday evenings from 5.30pm to 9.30pm, closed Sunday.

Its non-alcoholic listing is a single drink, which would normally place it low in this guide, except that the drink is a rotating one. Mike's Mocktail changes every other month; a lavender-honey build is the version most often reported, but the whole point is that it does not stay the same. That structure is worth drawing out, because it is a genuinely different model from the one most venues use. A restaurant with a printed six-drink zero-proof list has made a stocking decision — it has bought the ingredients and trained the specs, and those drinks will be there in April as in January. A restaurant with one rotating drink has instead folded the non-alcoholic option into the kitchen's development cycle, so the drink moves with the seasons and the menu the way a wine pairing would. At this level of cooking that is arguably the more meaningful commitment, because it means somebody is thinking about the drink every eight weeks rather than having thought about it once. The trade-off for a guest is predictability: you cannot look up what you will be served, and if you dislike the current build there is no second option. For a special-occasion dinner in a city with no dedicated zero-proof cocktail bar, that is a reasonable exchange, and Chinatown's density means Lucky Belly's far deeper list is two minutes away if it is not.

Non-alcoholic menu: what to order

  • Mike's Mocktail (rotates every other month; a lavender-honey build among them)

Its menu features a drink called "Mike's Mocktail," which, not surprisingly, is also really good.
