Fiji Kava

Fiji Kava occupies Suite 107B of the Dillingham Trade Center at 1007 Dillingham Boulevard, in Kalihi, directly across from Honolulu Community College. Daya Nand has been running it and selling kava from the same tucked-away shop for over thirty years, which makes it comfortably the longest-established kava business on Oʻahu — it predates the current wave of kava lounges by decades and has outlasted most of them. Several of the island's better-known kava rooms have closed in recent years, including Hale Noa, Kava Kafé in Kapahulu, and Kava Roots and Uluwehi's on the North Shore, which makes a three-decade run worth noting on its own.

The offer is narrow and traditional. Nand imports pure powdered kava root from Fiji rather than blending or flavouring it, and sells it three ways: prepared by the cup at around $5, by the bottle to take away, or by the bag for customers preparing it themselves at home. At weekends there is an all-you-can-drink arrangement at $40, which is the format most regulars use and which reflects how kava is actually drunk in the Pacific — over hours, in company, in repeated small shells rather than as a single serving. Fijian kava is generally heavier and more sedating than the Hawaiian 'awa poured at 'Awa Hou down the road, so the two are not interchangeable experiences. As with every kava venue in this guide, the honest framing applies: there is no alcohol here and none is served, but kava is psychoactive, and for some people in recovery that distinction matters enough to avoid it. Opening hours are limited and worth checking before travelling — 10am to 5pm Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, noon to 8pm Friday and Saturday, closed Wednesday and Sunday.
