The Urban Oyster is chef Jasmine Norton's oyster bar at 914 W 36th Street on the Avenue in Hampden. Norton grew up in Baltimore and traces the whole business to being seven years old, when her father introduced her to oysters and taught her to shuck them shortly after. She built the business the hard way, selling dressed and grilled oysters at Baltimore-area farmers' markets from around 2017 before opening a bricks-and-mortar location and moving to the Hampden site in summer 2022. The Baltimore Sun reported that her fans had travelled from as far as Kentucky, describing the venue as the only Black, woman-owned oyster bar in the country — a claim worth stating carefully, since the restaurant's own website words it two different ways on two different pages, once as the first in Maryland and once as the first in the United States. The menu runs deviled eggs topped with a fried oyster fritter, charred prawns in Calabrian chilli-lemon butter, and chargrilled oysters in four styles including a Cheese Louise and a bacon-barbecue-cheddar.

The drinks list carries a section headed "Zero Proof Cocktails" holding four named drinks: UO Lemonade, Kiwi-Me, Spa Day and Pink Ginger. Two honest caveats about that list. The restaurant publishes the ingredients for its alcoholic cocktails but not for its zero-proof ones, and no prices are shown for either, so what is actually in a Spa Day or a Kiwi-Me has to be asked at the bar — an odd asymmetry, and the one thing a non-drinker most needs from a menu. And the list rotates: a Tamarind Tradewinds that appeared on earlier menus is no longer served. What is dependable is the format — four built drinks with their own heading rather than an on-request afterthought, in a room where the food is the reason to come. Service runs Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm and Sundays from 1pm, with reservations through Resy.
