Two Frays Brewery

Two Frays is a small Garfield brewery on Penn Avenue run by Mike and Jen Onofray, a husband-and-wife team, in a 120-year-old former Star Soap building — the old hand-painted Star Soap billboard is still on the side of it, alongside a ceramic mosaic. Their French bulldogs, Zeus and Iris, appear on the beer can labels, and the patio is dog-friendly. Jen Onofray has described the intent as staying true to their vision and making sure the community knows this is their space, and the brewery has worked at being a genuine neighbourhood hub rather than a destination taproom.

What makes it matter well beyond Garfield is that it brews its own non-alcoholic beer, on site, and appears to be the only craft brewery in Pennsylvania doing so — a claim made not by the brewery but by The Open Road, the alcohol-free bottle shop a few blocks away that stocks half the state's non-alcoholic output and would know. The origin story is refreshingly unstrategic. In the brewery's own telling, when some of their customers asked whether they would ever brew a non-alcoholic beer, they did not ask why or scoff and say no — they said they thought they could, why not, and gave it a shot. That first brew landed in 2022. Mike Onofray framed the audience simply: these are for the designated driver, or someone who has to work tomorrow. The current alcohol-free line runs a West Coast IPA called Finicky Beast and a fruited blonde called Fruity Pebbles, both sold in cans through local retailers as well as poured in the taproom. Two honest caveats. The names rotate — an earlier pair of alcohol-free beers went under the name You Do You, and the brewery has also made a Half Way There hoppy amber at 0.9% ABV, which is low-alcohol rather than non-alcoholic and would not qualify under Pennsylvania's 0.5% line. And the taproom menu is not readable online, so confirm what is actually on tap before travelling for a specific beer.
