Uncle Nicky's Italian Specialties runs on the northern-Italian bar-café model, which is worth understanding because it is the whole reason the place works for someone who is not drinking. In Italy a bar is a café: the same counter serves espresso at eight in the morning, a sandwich at one, and an aperitivo at six, and nobody treats the switch as a change of venue or a change of intent. Uncle Nicky's imports that structure to South Lamar, opening at 10am and running to 10pm seven days a week.

The practical effect is that the aperitivo hour — the part of the evening a non-drinker usually has to navigate — happens in a room that is still recognisably a café. Ordering something alcohol-free at 6pm in a cocktail bar marks you out; ordering it at an Italian counter that was serving cappuccino an hour earlier does not. For anyone newly sober, or pregnant, or simply driving, that difference is more useful than a long mocktail list.

The named alcohol-free drinks are the Porch Swing and the Fluffy Orange Mule, both listed in Visit Austin's official zero-proof guide. The Mule in particular is a sensible piece of menu design — the alcoholic original is defined by ginger and lime rather than by the vodka, so the non-alcoholic version loses very little in translation, which is not true of most spirit-forward classics.

The deli side of the business runs alongside, so the room is as much a shop and a lunch spot as a bar. The grade is an honest 3: two named drinks, well chosen, in a setting that does a lot of the work. Worth confirming the current list, as café menus rotate more often than bar menus do.
