1620 E 7th St, Austin, TX 78702

Tulum Botanical occupies 1620 East 7th Street in Central East Austin, a tropical-styled kava and kratom lounge that also trades as Bula Tulum. It is fully alcohol-free and open every day from noon to midnight, which puts it directly against the East 6th and East 7th bar strip at exactly the hours that strip is busiest — the practical value of a room like this is that it is open when the alternative is a bar.

The sourcing claim is the strongest thing the venue says about itself: 100% organic, rigorously tested for purity and safety, from farms in the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia. In this category that is not marketing boilerplate. Kava quality varies enormously with cultivar and processing, and kratom is an unregulated product in most of the United States, sold with wide variation in alkaloid content between batches and vendors. A venue that tests and can say where its material comes from is making a meaningful claim.

The ordering model is unusual and worth knowing before you arrive. There is no conventional cocktail list to read; the bar asks guests to describe how they want to feel and recommends a blend from there. Drinks are pitched as calming, energizing or mood-enhancing. That is a candid description of what is on offer, and it makes the next paragraph more rather than less necessary.

This is an alcohol-free room, not a substance-free one, and the distinction is sharper here than at most venues on this site. Kava is a mild sedative that should not be mixed with alcohol or sedating medication. Kratom is a different substance altogether, acting on opioid receptors, and it carries a genuinely contested risk profile that includes physical dependence and withdrawal with regular use. For someone in recovery — particularly from opioids — that is not a footnote, and a bar organised around choosing a substance by desired effect is worth approaching with that clearly in mind. Ask what is in a drink and say plainly what you are avoiding.

Beyond the drinks it functions as a community space, with poetry on Sunday nights and an open mic for musicians on Wednesdays.
