Urban Farmer

Urban Farmer occupies the ground floor of the Logan Hotel on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, working a farm-to-table steakhouse format — dry-aged beef, a cheese cart, a long wine list. It is a hotel restaurant in the good sense: open from seven in the morning to half past eleven at night, every day, which makes it one of the more reliable late kitchens in Logan Square.

The drinks menu carries a printed heading, "No Proof Cocktails", and the builds under it are more considered than the category usually gets in a steakhouse. The Cadillac Shirley Temple is the standout, and the joke in the name is doing real work: a Shirley Temple is the archetypal drink handed to whoever is not drinking, and this version rebuilds it seriously. House-made grenadine replaces the bottled syrup, and verjus — the pressed juice of unripe grapes — supplies the sharp, wine-like acidity that the original completely lacks. That single ingredient is what turns a children's drink into something an adult can hold through a steak dinner.

The Crimson Fizz runs cranberry against a cranberry shrub with Fever-Tree ginger beer, doubling the fruit in two forms, one fresh and one preserved in vinegar, which gives it a much longer finish than juice alone. The Fauxpresso Negroni is the after-dinner option, taking St. Agrestis's Phony Espresso Negroni — a bottled alcohol-free amaro-style aperitif — into cold brew and orange.

On the beer side the house pours Athletic Brewing's Upside Dawn golden ale, which is the reliable non-alcoholic beer to find on a list where the alternative would be a soft drink.

The practical case here is the occasion. A steakhouse is where anniversaries, business dinners and family celebrations happen, and it is precisely where a non-drinker is most conspicuous — the wine is the ritual, and declining it is visible. A printed section with four named options, one of them explicitly designed to be a grown-up version of the drink you would otherwise be handed, removes that friction entirely.
