Wooden Robot Brewery

Wooden Robot Brewery was founded in 2015 by two friends, Dan Wade and Josh Patton, blending Belgian farmhouse tradition with American craft brewing on a 15-barrel system at 1440 S Tryon Street in South End. Wade's brewing and Patton's business background built what the brewery itself calls a beloved Charlotte institution, and Queen City Nerve readers voted it the city's Best Brewery in 2024. The brewery has been through a great deal since: Wade died in an accident at the brewery in February 2024, and Patton concluded his involvement in October 2025 to pursue work outside North Carolina, with the wider Wade family stepping into a larger ownership and management role to carry it on. The South End site is more than a taproom — two bars, a biergarten, a private event space, a scratch kitchen cooking with North and South Carolina ingredients, and a coffee bar that opens at 8am on weekdays. Dogs are welcome on the patios.

The taproom prints a Non-Alcoholic section, and it needs reading carefully, because it mixes two very different things under one heading. The straightforwardly inert options are an N/A beer at $6, Walker Brothers kombucha at $6, sodas from $2, and the full coffee bar — plus a rotating shelf of non-alcoholic cans that has included five Untitled Art varieties and Athletic Brewing. The other three items on that list are not mocktails. Five Flowers ($8 for 12oz) is a THC and CBD cooler brand rather than a house drink, and the 420-Rita and Blueberry Yum Yum ($14 each) sit alongside the brewery's "Hightails", which are built with a Calmezzi THC and CBD elixir. All three are alcohol-free, which is why the brewery groups them where it does, and for some people avoiding alcohol that is exactly what they want. For anyone in recovery from anything else, or simply not looking to be altered, the distinction matters more than the heading suggests — so order by name, not by section.
