Zero Proof Lounge

Zero Proof Lounge occupies a suite on West Olive Avenue in Glendale, which puts it in the West Valley — a part of metro Phoenix with almost no alcohol-free nightlife at all, and a forty-minute drive from the downtown cocktail bars that dominate every list of the city's zero-proof options. Its existence is the point as much as its menu: for a large stretch of the metro it is the only sober bar there is. Founders Alanna and Chloe built it on the premise that connection, celebration and a night out do not have to be organised around alcohol, and pitched it at anyone exploring mindful drinking, living alcohol-free, or simply wanting a different kind of evening.

The room reads as a deliberate hybrid: part kava bar, part speakeasy, part upscale lounge, with dim lighting and red LEDs. That matters more than it sounds. A great many alcohol-free venues default to the aesthetics of a cafe or a wellness studio — bright, clean, faintly clinical — which signals recovery rather than a night out, and quietly tells the customer what kind of person they are assumed to be. Building a dark, low-lit lounge instead is a decision about dignity.

The menu runs botanical-tea cocktails alongside kava builds shaped like familiar drinks: the Zero 'Bull, the Blushing Lemon, a kava Pina Colada, a kava White Russian. Programming is weekly rather than occasional, with open mics and live music, which is what turns a bar into a place people return to. It opens daily at 2pm, running to 10pm on Sunday and Monday and to midnight the rest of the week.

One thing to be clear about before going. Alongside kava, the lounge serves kratom. Both are alcohol-free; both are psychoactive, and kratom acts on opioid receptors and carries documented dependence and withdrawal risk. For anyone in recovery that is a material distinction — this is a room without alcohol, not a room without substances, and it is worth deciding in advance which of those two things you are actually looking for. The staff are reportedly straightforward about what is in each build if you ask, which is the right way to handle it.
