BlackSheep Wine Bar & Merchant

BlackSheep sits on San Marcos Place in historic downtown Chandler, at the southeastern edge of the Phoenix metro and far enough from the downtown Phoenix cocktail cluster to serve a genuinely different crowd — this is a neighbourhood destination rather than a stop on a bar crawl. It operates as both a wine bar and a merchant, with bottles to drink in or carry out, and describes itself as equal parts wine bar and conversational destination. That is a fair account of the room: it is built for talking, at a volume that allows it, which is not a given in a metro whose bar scene skews loud.

The non-alcoholic drinks are constructed rather than poured. The Citrusy Glow is Seedlip Citrus with fresh lemon; the Spice Girl sets berries against the warmer, aromatic Seedlip Spice. Building on a named alcohol-free spirit instead of sweetening juice and calling the result a mocktail is precisely the distinction that earns a wine bar a place in a directory like this one — a wine bar has the least structural reason to bother, since its whole proposition is the bottle list. The bar opens at 11am on weekdays and runs a Rebel Hour nightly from 7pm, seven days a week, so it works for an afternoon as readily as an evening. It is a licensed wine bar, so the alcohol-free list is one real section of the menu rather than the whole offering. But for a non-drinker joining a table of wine drinkers — the specific social situation a wine bar creates and rarely solves — having two properly built drinks printed on the same list as everything else is the difference between being catered for and being an afterthought.
