Kava Kasa is a kava and tea bar on Cherry Street SE in East Hills, founded by Riccardo Schinina and billed on its own site as Michigan's only kava bar. It serves no alcohol. Kava is a root from the South Pacific — Kava Kasa sources its own from Vanuatu — and it is psychoactive: it is drunk for a sedating, mildly euphoric effect, which is worth stating plainly for anyone in recovery who is weighing whether the room is right for them. Drinks are ordered in two steps, a kava grade followed by a mixer, and served in a shell with a spoon. The bar also pours teas and coffee and runs a pizza menu, and it keeps genuinely late hours for a venue with nothing alcoholic behind the bar.

Drip Drop Cocktail Room is a craft cocktail bar at 445 Bridge Street NW, in the middle of the Bridge Street run on the West Side. It carries between twenty and twenty-five hand-crafted cocktails that rotate through the year, and its distinguishing practice is that every mixer is made fresh in house — syrups, cordials and all — from what the bar describes as responsibly sourced and thoughtful ingredients. Buffalo Traders Lounge is a cocktail bar at 950 East Fulton Street in East Hills, describing its remit as bringing the art of cocktail culture to the local community of Grand Rapids. New Holland Brewing – The Knickerbocker

The Knickerbocker is New Holland Brewing's Grand Rapids brewpub, on the Bridge Street strip at 417 Bridge Street NW. It is a large room by brewpub standards — three separate bars, a wood-fired oven, indoor and outdoor beer gardens and several private dining spaces. Its relevance to non-alcoholic drinking is that New Holland brews its own alcohol-free beer rather than stocking somebody else's: Zylch IPA is a 0.00% ABV IPA made with ingredients that let it carry real malt and hops. The brewery also produces Aquanut, a non-alcoholic sparkling water, and the bars mix a selection of zero-proof cocktails. In a city that has called itself Beer City USA since 2012, this is the brewery that answers the question of what a non-drinker orders.
