Armadillo Den is a three-acre outdoor entertainment complex on Menchaca Road in far South Austin, opened in December 2020 by partner Brett Berry. The two-storey bar anchors live music seven nights a week, five rotating food trucks including Biggie's Yardbird, Via 313 and Los Danzantes, a large off-leash dog park, yard games and a thirteen-foot LED wall for watch parties.
The thing that earns it a place here is technical: Armadillo Den runs a draft mocktail programme, and Visit Austin calls it award-winning. Non-alcoholic drinks are almost universally built glass by glass, which makes them slow, inconsistent between bartenders, and the first thing dropped when a bar gets busy. Putting them on tap solves all three at once — the drink is pre-batched, carbonated under pressure and pulled in seconds, so it arrives as fast as a beer and tastes the same every time.
On a three-acre site with live music and a queue, that is not a detail. It is the difference between a non-drinker getting a considered drink and getting a soda because the bar is slammed. Very few venues in Texas have made that investment.
The drinks themselves are built for the climate. The Frescadillo Paloma runs pink grapefruit with sea salt — salt rather than sugar, which is what makes a paloma refreshing rather than cloying in August heat. Ford's Ranch Water pairs Thai basil sparkling water with cucumber, a zero-proof reading of the West Texas ranch water that is otherwise tequila, lime and Topo Chico.
The rest of the setup is unusually easy for mixed groups. It is kid-friendly until 6pm Monday to Friday, the dog park and food trucks give an evening somewhere to go that is not the bar, and the whole thing is outdoors. Open from 4pm on weekdays and from noon at weekends, to midnight or later.
