Midnight Cowboy

Midnight Cowboy is among Austin's oldest and best-known speakeasies, opened in 2012 at 313 East 6th Street in a building that previously housed a brothel operating as a massage parlour under the name Midnight Cowboy Modeling Oriental Massage. The bar kept the name and the neon, which is the more honest choice than scrubbing it.

Entry is by reservation only and deliberately theatrical. Guests are given a code name drawn from a Prohibition-era bartender — Harry Craddock, for instance — then press the corresponding button at an unmarked door, ring the bell, and are escorted to one of nine booths for a session of an hour or two. Drinks are built tableside from a bar cart. Menus follow themed concepts, one recent list organised around tarot, spanning stirred classics, martinis, sours, tiki and zero-proof builds. Cocktails run fourteen to sixteen dollars, with a discount for ordering multiples of the same drink.

The zero-proof drinks use alcohol-free gin and whiskey to construct full cocktails rather than juice-based mocktails, which in a room where the drink is assembled in front of you is the only approach that would work — a bar cart has nowhere to hide.

The booth format is the real argument for coming here as a non-drinker. There is no bar to stand at, no rounds, a fixed seating time and a table of your own on a block that is otherwise the loudest in Texas. Midnight Cowboy is the quiet, intentional exception on 6th Street, and that structure does more for an evening without alcohol than any single drink can.

One caveat worth stating: the published zero-proof selections are not a fixed named list and rotate with the themed menus, so at least one third-party menu listing shows no non-alcoholic section at all. Mention when booking that you want zero-proof drinks and the bar can plan the session around it. Open Tuesday to Saturday evenings.
