Assembly sits on the roof of the Logan Hotel on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with sightlines down the boulevard to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and across Logan Square's fountain. It opens at four in the afternoon and runs until midnight midweek and two in the morning on Friday and Saturday, which makes it one of the genuinely late rooms in this part of the city.
The drinks menu prints a section headed "Non-Alcoholic Imbibements", and the phrasing is worth noting. Most bars file these drinks under "mocktails", a word that carries a faint apology in it — the mock prefix concedes that the drink is an imitation of something better. Calling them imbibements instead is a small thing, but it signals a kitchen that has thought about how the order feels to the person placing it.
There are two builds. The Strawberry Ginger Smash at twelve dollars muddles strawberry with ginger and lemon and lengthens it with ginger beer — a smash in the proper sense, where the fruit is broken up in the glass rather than pre-juiced, so the drink changes as the ice melts. The Cucumber Mint 'Gin' Spritz at fourteen puts cucumber and mint against lime with lemon-lime soda; the quotation marks around 'Gin' are the menu's own, acknowledging that it is reaching for a gin-and-tonic's cool herbaceous register without a spirit in it.
Two drinks is a short list, and it is fair to say so. What compensates is the setting, and this is the real argument for a rooftop as a place to spend an evening without drinking. The view is the event. There is no bar to prop up, the seating is arranged outward rather than inward, and the reason everyone came is visible over the parapet rather than sitting in a glass. The hardest part of not drinking is rarely the drink itself — it is the hours between nine and midnight when a group has run out of things to do except order another round. A rooftop at two in the morning solves that better than a longer mocktail list would.
