Bike Dog Brewing's East Sacramento taproom on 66th Street is a working brewery, and breweries are among the hardest rooms for a non-drinker: the entire proposition is beer, the staff are enthusiasts about beer, and the alcohol-free provision is typically one dusty can.
Bike Dog carries three distinct options, which is unusual. Hop water is the most interesting and the most underrated product in this whole category. It is sparkling water dry-hopped with the same aromatic hops used in an IPA — Citra, Mosaic and their relatives — producing something bitter, resinous and citrus-forward with no alcohol, no sugar and virtually no calories. Crucially, it tastes of the thing a taproom actually smells of. Ordering one gets you the hop aroma everybody else came for, poured from the same wall of taps, and nobody looking at your glass can tell the difference.
KC Kombucha covers a different need. Fermentation supplies acidity, tannin and a faint funk — the structural qualities alcohol normally provides — so a kombucha holds up across a long session rather than cloying after one glass. Being locally made and rotating means it changes, which matters if you are a regular.
Untitled Art non-alcoholic beer completes the set for anyone who wants an actual beer rather than an alternative to one; the brand has become one of the more respected NA producers in American craft.
Hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 3pm to 9pm midweek and from noon at weekends, closed Mondays. East Sacramento is residential, so this is a neighbourhood taproom rather than a destination — which is exactly the context in which having real options matters most.
There is a broader point about breweries worth making here. The craft beer world has been unusually quick to take non-alcoholic drinks seriously, faster than the cocktail world was, and the reason is technical rather than moral: brewers already understand that hops, malt and fermentation carry flavour independently of alcohol, so making something good without it is an engineering problem they find interesting rather than a compromise they resent. Hop water came out of that culture. It is one of the few alcohol-free products with no alcoholic original to be measured against, and it is better for it.
