The Snug

The Snug is on 15th Street in Midtown Sacramento, part of the Irish Hospitality Group along with Ro Sham Beaux and The Butterscotch Den, and it stocks the same alcohol-free products as both: the St. Agrestis Phony Negroni and Guinness 0.

What distinguishes this location is the clock. It opens at 4pm and serves until 2am, seven nights a week, with no closed days. That is worth dwelling on, because late-night is the hardest gap in sober hospitality anywhere. The pattern in almost every city is the same: the thoughtful zero-proof drinks are served in restaurants and cocktail bars that close by ten or eleven, and the venues still open at one in the morning have nothing but soda and cranberry juice. A non-drinker who wants to stay out late is usually choosing between going home early and holding a glass of Coke for three hours.

A bottled Phony Negroni solves that particular problem well. At 1am a busy bartender has neither the time nor the inclination to build a considered mocktail, and asking for one produces either a long wait or something disappointing. A bottle from the fridge takes ten seconds, arrives correct every time, and tastes properly bitter. It is not craft, but at that hour craft is not what is available to anyone.

Being in Midtown puts it within walking distance of Kupros and Ro Sham Beaux, so it works as a late stop after somewhere with a fuller menu earlier in the evening.

The Irish pub format helps in a way that is easy to overlook. Pubs are built around sitting and talking rather than around a drinks list — there are booths, the music is usually low enough for conversation, and nobody is working through a cocktail menu. That structure suits a non-drinker better than a cocktail bar does, because the evening was never organised around what is in the glass. Add a bottle of something properly bitter from the fridge and the gap between your night and everyone else's effectively closes.
