Cafe Jazzy Rose

Cafe Jazzy Rose opened in January 2025 at 44 Ionia Avenue SW, and is the first bar in downtown Grand Rapids to serve no alcohol at all. It comes from Joseff VanHorn and Ben Kaja, two longtime hospitality operators who built the business on a specific reading of the market: that a growing share of drinkers, particularly younger ones, want the ritual and the room without the ethanol. A 2025 Gallup study reporting that 54 percent of U.S. adults drink alcohol — the lowest figure since Gallup began tracking in 1939 — was cited in local coverage of the opening. The owners describe the goal as making space for customers to have, in their words, "fun and a fancy cocktail" without "the pressure that alcohol imposes on people." The concept is styled as a Jazz Age restaurant and elixir lounge, with dim lighting, table service at dinner and a drinks menu whose sections nod to iconic jazz locales.

The drink program is where the venue separates itself from a restaurant that simply keeps a few mocktails on hand. Rather than building zero-proof analogues of gin and whisky, Cafe Jazzy Rose leans on functional botanicals, listing its drinks as adaptogenic elixirs built with lion's mane mushroom, ashwagandha, tulsi, valerian root, hemp and ginseng — ingredients in the same family as the compounds found in chamomile tea or kava, and marketed for mood rather than intoxication. Non-alcoholic beer and non-alcoholic wine are also stocked for guests who want something more familiar. The food is Southern-leaning and unusually substantial for a bar: shrimp and grits, mahi tacos, smash burgers, bowls, soups, salads and handhelds, with a vegetarian-forward streak that produces lion's mane "crab-less cakes" and the Sun Ra Nut Burger. Lunch runs as quick service; dinner is fuller table service. The kitchen and bar operate Tuesday through Sunday, 11am to 7pm.
