Ceremony began in Virginia Beach in 2022 as Hampton Roads' first dry bottle shop, and the Norfolk store on Baldwin Avenue in Chelsea is now its flagship. The proposition is simple and unusually complete: non-alcoholic beer, wine and spirits, plus the mixers, bitters and bar tools needed to actually build a drink at home, curated rather than piled up, and run on a zero-waste model.

What makes it significant beyond Norfolk is that it worked. Dedicated alcohol-free retail is a hard business — thin margins, a young category, a customer base still forming — and the sector's casualty rate is high. Richmond, two hours west, has just lost both a dry bottle shop and its only alcohol-free bar. Ceremony has gone the other way, expanding to several Virginia locations and across the state line into North Carolina, with more announced. Very few alcohol-free retailers anywhere have demonstrated the model scales, and that makes this one worth paying attention to.

The range is the reason to visit rather than order online. Non-alcoholic spirits in particular are difficult to buy blind: the category is full of products that taste like nothing or like perfume, prices run high, and a bad bottle sours people on the whole idea. A curated shelf with someone behind the counter who has tasted everything solves that in a way no website can. The bitters and mixers matter just as much, because most of what makes a drink feel like a drink lives in those bottles rather than in the base spirit.

Ceremony has also pushed past retail into service, running a non-alcohol pop-up bar inside a Norfolk coffee shop — the same shared-premises model that keeps alcohol-free bars viable elsewhere. Practical notes: closed Mondays, 11am to 7pm Tuesday to Saturday, and noon to 5pm on Sunday. There is a second Hampton Roads outlet operating as a booth inside Painted Tree Boutiques on Laskin Road in Virginia Beach. That second site is a booth within a larger boutique rather than a standalone shop, so treat the Norfolk store as the real destination if you want the full range and someone to talk to about it. The company has also announced further Virginia openings, which suggests the expansion has not finished.
