Haraz Coffee House (Fishtown)

Haraz Coffee House opened its Fishtown room on West Girard Avenue in October 2025, the second Philadelphia site for a Yemeni coffee chain that has expanded quickly across the United States. The reason it belongs in this directory is the combination of two things that rarely occur together: a room that serves no alcohol whatsoever, and a closing time of midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The menu is the traditional Yemeni one, and it rewards knowing what the words mean. Jubani is made from coffee together with the husk of the coffee cherry — the fruit that surrounds the bean — spiced with cinnamon and ginger. Qishr goes further and uses the husk alone, with no bean at all; it is far lower in caffeine than brewed coffee and tastes closer to a spiced fruit tea, which makes it the sensible order late in the evening. Harazi mufawar is coffee with cardamom and cream, richer and closer to a dessert. Sana'ani, named for the capital, is the plainest of them: black coffee with cardamom, and the one to order if you want to taste the bean itself.

The tea list runs in parallel. Adeni karak chai is black tea brewed with the house haraz spice blend and cream, the everyday drink of Aden, and there is a saffron version that is worth the premium. The haraz latte works the house spice into a double espresso with honey and milk.

The Philadelphia Inquirer has covered the city's Yemeni coffeehouse boom repeatedly through 2025 and 2026 — four cafes opened in 2025 alone — and its framing of what these rooms offer is exact: spaces without alcohol or reservations. That second half matters as much as the first. You do not book, you are not on a clock, and nobody is turning the table.

On alcohol, the position is evidence-based rather than a claim the venue makes in those words: the menu carries no alcoholic item, and the house is halal, Muslim-owned and keeps a prayer area on site. It serves caffeine only — no kava, no kratom, nothing else psychoactive.
