1001 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90015
Jalsah sits on South Broadway at Tenth, in the South Park end of Downtown Los Angeles, and it is a Yemeni coffeehouse in the full sense rather than a cafe that happens to sell Yemeni coffee. The name is the Arabic word for a sitting - a gathering, the act of staying somewhere with people - and the shop builds everything around that. Its three stated principles are the origin, the method and the room: beans grown on terraced mountain farms in the Yemeni highlands and sourced direct, every cup made to order with no shortcuts, and a space with free Wi-Fi, plenty of seating and no pressure to leave. Yemen is where coffee was first cultivated and brewed before it went out through the port of Mokha, and the shop leans on that history without being precious about it.
The drinks list runs to eleven Yemeni signature preparations plus a full espresso bar, and the traditional half is the reason to come. Hot Adeni is black tea with milk, cardamom and warm spices - the Aden-style chai that anchors most Yemeni menus. Mufawaar is the spiced coffee, rich and aromatic, and there is an Adeni Mufawaar that crosses the two. Qishr is brewed from the coffee husk rather than the bean, cascara-style, balanced with Yemeni spice. Baydani is the white drink, made with toasted sesame and ginger. Jebani rounds out the traditional set. Against those sit the modern lattes the shop is equally known for - the Jalsah Signature, the Jalsah Spices, pistachio, coconut, Dubai chocolate and tiramisu - plus iced builds, a slow bar, teas and juices, and fresh pastries including a honeycomb and a smoked salmon bagel.
Nothing on the menu contains alcohol. The hours are what make it useful for an evening rather than a morning: 7am to 8pm Monday through Thursday, 7am to 9pm on Friday and Saturday, and 8am to 9pm on Sunday. That matters in this particular part of Downtown, which is dense with bars serving the Crypto.com Arena and LA Live crowd and thin on anywhere to sit for two hours without drinking. Two practical notes: the in-store board carries the full lineup, which is longer than the website's sample, and the room genuinely is built for working, so it fills with laptops on weekday afternoons.
