306 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405

Three blocks from the Pacific in Santa Monica's Ocean Park neighborhood, Kavahana operates as a fully alcohol-free kava nectar bar and lounge — one of the only establishments of its kind in the United States. Every drink on the menu is zero-proof by design, not as an afterthought. The space runs as both a daytime café and a late-night hangout, staying open until 1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, which puts it in rare company among alcohol-free venues in Los Angeles that can actually compete with the city's bar scene on hours alone.

The drink program is built around Kavahana's proprietary Kava Nectar, a cold-pressed whole-root kava powder sourced from noble cultivars in the South Pacific. The Paradise Nectar — kava nectar blended with Indian mango, fresh pineapple, and fresh lime — is the crowd entry point and one of the most-ordered items. The Beach Nectar layers kava with blue spirulina, fresh lime, and house coconut foam for a visually striking, earthy-sweet pour. The Ube Coconut Nectar combines kava with ground purple yam and coconut foam, reflecting co-founder Hannah Wilen's commitment to AAPI-rooted flavors. Wilen and co-founder Neil Bhatia built the concept after years of introducing kava at underground events and Smorgasburg LA; the name Kavahana is a portmanteau of "kava" and Hannah's first name. Before 6 PM, 100% Kona coffee from Hawaii's Big Island and ceremonial matcha round out the daytime menu.

Kavahana is genuinely walk-in friendly — no reservations, no dress code, free parking in the rear, and a dog-friendly back patio. The space has indoor bar seating, cozy corners suited for remote work, and an outdoor patio where weekly events happen: Tuesday is the Santa Monica Open Mic and Wednesday is Comedy Night, both free and open to anyone. It works equally well as a morning coffee stop, an afternoon work session, or a late-night social alternative. First-timers should ask the staff for a guided introduction to the kava nectar menu; the team is trained to walk newcomers through the experience, including what the characteristic tongue-tingle from kavalactones actually feels like.
