Lightbox Cafe

Lightbox Cafe on South 4th Street in Queen Village is the home of the Jaya Kava programme, and it is billed as the Philadelphia region's first kava bar. It is entirely vegan and entirely alcohol-free. It was founded by Jennifer Hombach — a sustainability activist and yoga teacher who first ran Jaya Kava as a pop-up — with Gabriel Vazquez, formerly an operations manager at Philadelphia Brewing Co., and the two opened the permanent room in 2021.

Hombach's own framing of the concept, given to the Philadelphia Inquirer, is that a kava bar is an alternative to bars, and a friendlier and more social one. The room was built to that brief: certified Pacific Island kava served traditionally in coconut shells or mixed into what the bar calls kavatails, alongside kratom teas, herbal elixirs, cacao drinks and superfood smoothies. Named pours include House Kava Kava, the Mylky Kava brewed with oat mylk and dates, a Cacao Kava, the Kava Mule, a Kava Colada, a Passion Fruit Kava and a Hibiscus Kava Spritz. A Golden Chai Kava was listed here previously and is no longer on the menu as of August 2026. The food is plant-based throughout — bowls, toasts, wraps and vegan desserts.

An important practical correction, because it changes what this venue is useful for: Lightbox now trades daytime hours only, opening at ten in the morning and closing at five, shut on Sunday and Monday. Earlier coverage described kava service beginning at five in the evening, so the evening trade appears to have been discontinued. It is now an afternoon room rather than a night-out one, which is why it is graded as a strong daytime destination rather than as a bar substitute. Check before making a late trip.

On kava and kratom, the same caution applies here as anywhere. Neither contains alcohol; both are psychoactive. Kava is calming and mildly sedative; kratom is stimulant at low doses, sedative at higher ones, and carries a real dependence risk. Anyone pregnant, on medication, managing liver health or in recovery should consult a doctor first.
