Kimball House

Kimball House opened in 2013 in the old Decatur rail depot at 303 East Howard Avenue, a red-brick building right against the tracks, and it has spent the decade since setting the standard for bar work in metro Atlanta. The Michelin Guide recommends it and gave it the Exceptional Cocktails award in 2024. The room is known for three things: an absinthe programme served from proper fountains, a raw bar carrying oysters from both coasts that is generally considered the best in the region, and a seasonal kitchen that changes with what is available. Service runs Tuesday through Sunday from five, to ten most nights and eleven on Friday and Saturday, with the kitchen closing an hour before the bar.

A bar with that kind of reputation could get away with a token non-alcoholic offering, and the interesting thing is that it does not. DiningOut's 2026 zero-proof survey noted that its zero-proof list does not phone it in. The house drink is Tokyo Zero, built on ginger, yuzu, lime and pineapple with white shoyu for salinity and depth — it draws from exactly the same Japanese-leaning flavour vocabulary as the alcoholic cocktail menu, which is what stops it reading as a soft drink beside a dozen oysters. The bar also pours the St. Agrestis Phony Negroni, the bottled non-alcoholic negroni that has become a shorthand for a bar taking the category seriously, and a non-alcoholic Grapefruit Royale topped with Oddbird de-alcoholised sparkling wine, which gives a table something to raise. The practical value is specific: you can sit at the bar, order a dozen oysters, and drink something built to go with them. Kimball House is fully licensed and its identity is built on spirits, so it sits at four on our scale, but the zero-proof drinks are named, constructed and permanent rather than improvised.
