Krave (Downtown Carrboro)

Krave's Carrboro room is the alcohol-free anchor for the western end of the Triangle. It sits on West Main Street in downtown Carrboro, minutes from the UNC campus and the Chapel Hill line, and it is the original: Krave opened here in 2015, won Indy Week's Best of the Triangle award in 2016, expanded to Greensboro that year and to Raleigh in August 2022, and every room runs the same model — kava, tea, late hours, no alcohol at all. The company describes its kava as ground aged root from the South Pacific with no additives, and its yerba mate collection, thirteen varieties from four countries, as the largest in North Carolina.

Kava deserves a plain description rather than a euphemism. It is a root drink from the South Pacific — ground, steeped in water, served in a shell — and it produces a mild, calming, sociable effect without containing any alcohol. It is still psychoactive in its own way, so it is not the right choice for everyone; anyone pregnant, on medication, or watching their liver health should ask a doctor first. What it offers people avoiding alcohol is the thing that is otherwise hardest to replace: something to hold, something that does something, in a room full of other people doing the same.

The Carrboro branch leans into the lounge format, with a large seating area at the back and the same ambient, world-lounge soundtrack as the Raleigh room. The tea list runs long, covering both the traditional roots and a broader range of brewed teas, and the crowd is a mix of students, graduate researchers and Carrboro locals. For a college town whose social life otherwise runs through Franklin Street's bars, it is a meaningful alternative — and with a midnight close, it is open when the alternative matters most. Oasis Botanical Lounge, a few blocks away in Carr Mill Mall, is Carrboro's other alcohol-free room, but it closes at seven; Krave is the one open when the bars are.
