Loro on South Lamar is the original location of the Asian smokehouse concept created by Tyson Cole, the chef behind Uchi, and Aaron Franklin, whose barbecue needs no introduction in Texas. The pairing produced something genuinely Austin: Central Texas smoke technique applied to Southeast Asian flavours, served counter-service in a big room with an even bigger patio. The concept has since expanded to Dallas and Houston, but this is where it started.

The food is loud in the best sense — smoked meats cut with chilli, herbs, citrus and sugar — and that has consequences for the drinks. A beverage here has to survive heat and fat, which is exactly the problem a weak non-alcoholic drink fails at. The Spicy Cucumber is built for the job: yuzu supplies sharp citrus acidity, and ghost agave brings genuine heat, so the drink cuts through the smoke instead of drowning under it. One named drink is a modest program, and the grade reflects that honestly — this is not a bar with a parallel zero-proof list. What makes it worth listing anyway is the combination of the drink actually being designed rather than defaulted, and the setting being unusually easy for a non-drinker: counter service means no bar-side negotiation, the patio is large and casual, and the venue trades all day from 11am rather than being an evening drinking room.

The South Lamar location is the flagship and stays busy through the evening; the patio absorbs most of it, and counter service keeps the queue moving faster than the crowd suggests.
