Rocky Coronado, a Texas-born chef who relocated to Detroit in 2017, opened Nepantla Cafe as an all-vegan Mexican food trailer rooted in Indigenous, pre-Columbian culinary traditions — plant-forward dishes like banana-blossom fish tacos, mock-duck fries, and Armadillo Eggs rather than meat-and-dairy standards. Coronado previously ran Rocky's Road Brew, a Southwest Detroit coffee truck, before launching Nepantla; the work earned Coronado a 2024 James Beard Award emerging-chef semifinalist nod.
The drink menu is alcohol-free because Coronado is: six years sober at the time of Nepantla's founding, Coronado has said, "I'm six years sober, so I want to create a safe space for sober adults at night. We will have vegan mocktails and elixirs." That shows up as a full non-alcoholic drink list built alongside the food — horchata and Horchata Latte, a Turmeric, Ginger, Pineapple Lemonade, Lavender Latte, Matcha Lemonade, the smoothie Sangre de Copil, and Rocky's Road Brew, a coffee drink named for Coronado's earlier truck — with nothing on the menu to abstain from.
Nepantla runs out of Southwest Detroit's Mexicantown, based at 5410 W. Vernor Highway with a rotating pop-up schedule around the city (Taco Tuesdays at Kelly's Bar in Hamtramck, Wednesdays at the Dequindre Cut, Saturday mornings at Eastern Market), alongside plans for a permanent brick-and-mortar buildout at the Vernor address. Check the cafe's Instagram for the current week's locations and hours, since both shift regularly as a trailer/pop-up operation.
