Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails opened in 2015 in the Park Shelton building on Kirby Street in Midtown Detroit, directly across from the Detroit Institute of Arts. Chef Doug Hewitt and owner Sandy Levine built it around a seasonal, farm-to-table menu and a deep collection of the French herbal liqueur the restaurant is named for; the Detroit Free Press named it its Restaurant of the Year in 2016. In June 2026, Hewitt was named to the James Beard Foundation's 2026-27 TasteTwenty class — chefs recognized as "Ones to Watch" for cooking and for work beyond the kitchen — with a Taste America stop planned in Detroit that September.
The drink list carries a standalone non-alcoholic section rather than a couple of afterthought mocktails. Named drinks include Seedlip & Cola, built on the Seedlip non-alcoholic spirit; Spiced Brazilian Limeade; Pickle Mule; and Coffee Lime & Tonic, alongside housemade sodas and teas that rotate with the kitchen's seasonal menu.
The space is known for its bright green walls, living wall of succulents, and dried-flower arrangements — a deliberate contrast to Detroit's long winters — with a front cocktail bar where guests can order just snacks and drinks without committing to a full seasonal tasting menu. It sits in the Cultural Center pocket of Midtown, alongside the DIA, the Detroit Public Library, and Wayne State.
