Nur House Cafe

Nur House Cafe opened on 25 March 2026 at 515 South 4th Street, taking over a downtown storefront that had been a Starbucks. Nur means light; the cafe is run by a Somali family, one of whom left a job teaching high-school English to open it, working with her brothers. Downtown Minneapolis has no shortage of coffee, but it has had almost nothing that reflects the city's East African population, and that is the stated reason the family opened here. Speaking to Racket in July 2026, Fadumo Ali said "the need has been long overdue. We haven't really felt represented within a lot of the coffee shop scene." The location does specific work: it sits within walking distance of the Commons and U.S. Bank Stadium, so it catches the crowds that fill and empty that end of downtown on event nights — exactly the moments when the surrounding options are bars.

The programme is coffee and tea led, drawing on Somali and other global traditions and rotating with the seasons rather than holding a fixed signature list, which is why this entry names no individual drinks: what was on the board in one month was not what was on it in the next, and this site does not publish drink names it has not seen. What is consistent is the baking, all of it done on site by a self-taught baker: chocolate pistachio scones, tahini banana bread, brown butter cinnamon rolls, and an Egyptian croissant bread pudding finished with cardamom creme anglaise. There is no alcohol on the premises and no bar. The hours run early — 6:30am on weekdays, catching commuters — and hold into the evening, closing at 8pm most nights and 9pm on Friday and Saturday, with the family noting that they extend further in summer when the Commons park across the way is busy. It is graded here as a strong non-alcoholic room rather than a late-night destination: it is entirely alcohol-free, but it closes before most people's evening does.
