8685 Central Ave NE, Blaine, MN 55434

Blaine sits at the top of the metro, a long way from the cultural-cafe cluster that has formed along Central Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis, and until recently its evening options were the usual suburban split between chain restaurants and bars. Qamaria Yemeni Coffee Co. opened here on Central Avenue NE with a grand opening on 15 December 2024, following the chain's Little Canada debut earlier that year and preceding its Eden Prairie shop by two months. The chain was started by two Yemeni entrepreneurs and its coffee programme is organised around Yemeni village traditions rather than around roast profiles, which is why the menu board reads as a list of place-linked preparations rather than a list of drink sizes. The room follows the same pattern as its siblings: large tables, long hours, and no alcohol licence anywhere in the building.

The drinks are the Qamaria standards. Qishr is brewed from coffee husks with ginger and cinnamon — a drink that predates the bean's export and is still what many Yemeni households make at home. Mufawaar is coffee with cardamom and cream; Juban is a lighter regional preparation; Aden tea is the black-tea-and-spice drink most of these shops treat as their signature. The house Qamaria latte is spiced with cardamom and cinnamon, and a pistachio latte, an espresso bar, iced refreshers and smoothies fill out the rest. Pastries lean sweet: pistachio milk cake, honeycomb bread and Dubai chocolate. What makes the Blaine shop worth the drive for anyone not drinking is the closing time. It runs to 11pm Monday through Thursday and to 1am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, later than every coffee shop and most restaurants in Anoka County, and it is one of only a handful of rooms in the north metro where a group can sit for three hours after a film with nothing alcoholic on the table. Seating is built for groups rather than for solo work, and the pastry counter does as much trade as the coffee bar late in the evening.
