Ritual is an alcohol-free kava lounge on North Dale Mabry Highway in Carrollwood, open 10am to 1am every day, and it is programmed harder than almost anything else in the category. Silent discos, bingo nights and ping-pong tournaments run alongside the drinks, which is the difference between a room that sells an alternative to alcohol and a room that offers an alternative to going to the pub. The seating is split deliberately between bean bags and bar stools — the former for the afternoon study crowd, the latter for the evening social one — and the same space does both jobs across a day.

The thing regulars mention first is not the drinks but the hosts. Dylan and Gloria are named repeatedly in accounts of the place as people who know their regulars and look after them, and that is worth recording because it is the actual mechanism by which a third place works. A bar without alcohol has to give people a reason to come back that is not chemical, and being known by name is the strongest one available.

Kava is the ground root of Piper methysticum, a shrub native to the South Pacific islands, prepared as a cold water infusion and drunk socially across Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa for roughly three thousand years. It contains no alcohol. It tastes earthy and bitter, numbs the lips and tongue on the first mouthful, and is mildly sedative rather than intoxicating in the way alcohol is. Kava exhibits reverse tolerance, so regular drinkers usually need less rather than more, and a first visit is best paced across an hour or two. Alongside it the lounge serves teas and coffee.

Carrollwood sits north of central Tampa and is largely residential, which makes a 1am close here meaningful in a way it would not be downtown — this is the local, not a destination, and the people using it are mostly walking back into the same neighbourhood.

One disclosure belongs in the open rather than in a footnote. **Kratom is served here alongside the kava**, and the lounge presents both as alternatives to alcohol. That framing is true as far as it goes, and incomplete in a way that matters to the people this directory is written for. Kratom is the leaf of a Southeast Asian tree, Mitragyna speciosa, whose principal alkaloids act on the opioid receptors; regular use produces tolerance and a real withdrawal syndrome, several US states ban it outright, and concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine products face active federal scheduling. Kava has no comparable dependence profile. Both are poured from the same bar, so ask which is in your cup.
