Sober Bar opened on Beach Boulevard South in downtown Gulfport in June 2026, after a period running as a Tampa Bay pop-up — a sequence worth noting, because it means the concept was tested against real customers before anyone signed a lease. Owners Sean Hawthorne and Collin Horton renovated the space into a moody room modelled on a New Orleans speakeasy, which is a deliberate rejection of how alcohol-free venues usually look. The default for the category is bright, clean and wellness-adjacent; a dark speakeasy says the customer is out for the evening rather than in recovery from one.

Every drink in the building is alcohol-free. The day trade is specialty coffee — espresso, matcha, kava-coffee builds — and the evening is craft zero-proof cocktails made on alcohol-alternative spirits, with names that would not look out of place on a full-strength list: Call Me an Ube, Red Widow, Linn & Juniper, Bee's Bouquet. Non-alcoholic beer and wine are stocked for anyone who wants the simpler thing, drawing on Ritual, The Free Spirits Company, Athletic, Guinness 0.0 and Heineken 0.0.

The hours are what make it function as a genuine third place rather than a novelty: 7am to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and 7am to 1am on Friday and Saturday. That span covers the morning coffee run, the afternoon work session and the Saturday night — the last of which is the hardest slot to fill without alcohol and the one almost every alcohol-free venue gives up on.

Gulfport itself is a small waterfront town southwest of St. Petersburg with an arts-district character, so this is a destination rather than somewhere to stumble into. Worth the drive: fully alcohol-free rooms that keep late weekend hours are rare anywhere, and this is the best-equipped one in Tampa Bay.
