8229 Parkedge Dr, Tampa, FL 33637
The Parkedge Drive room is the flagship of The Muddy Root, a five-site Florida group with further locations in Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Gulfport and Orlando. It opens at 7am on weekdays and runs to midnight every night of the week, which gives it one of the longest trading days of any alcohol-free venue in Tampa Bay.
What distinguishes the group is that it positions itself explicitly as an alcohol-free alternative rather than as a cafe with a botanical sideline. That framing shapes the menu, which is unusually complete for the category: kava, botanical teas, coffee, mocktails and fresh baked goods. A room that can serve breakfast, a working afternoon, and a late evening from the same counter is doing something more useful than a specialist kava bar that opens at 4pm — particularly for anyone in early recovery, for whom the empty hours are often the daytime ones rather than the night.
Kava is the ground root of Piper methysticum, a shrub native to the South Pacific islands, prepared as a cold water infusion and drunk socially across Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa for roughly three thousand years. It contains no alcohol. It tastes earthy and bitter, numbs the lips and tongue on the first mouthful, and is mildly sedative rather than intoxicating in the way alcohol is. Kava exhibits reverse tolerance, so regular drinkers usually need less rather than more to feel it, and a first visit rewards a slow pace across an hour or two.
The location, on the north-eastern edge of Tampa near Temple Terrace, puts it within reach of the University of South Florida area, where Twist and Insomnia ISG cover similar ground. Between them that quadrant of the city is now well served, which was not true a few years ago.
One thing has to be prominent rather than buried, and to the group's credit its own menu makes it easy to state accurately. **Kratom tea is a promoted category here with its own dedicated section, not an incidental listing** — the group's site gives it a full explanatory block describing it as a versatile herbal tea, positioned alongside kava as a main beverage category. Kratom is the leaf of Mitragyna speciosa, a Southeast Asian tree, and its principal alkaloids act on the opioid receptors; regular use produces tolerance and a genuine withdrawal syndrome, several US states ban it outright, and its concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine derivatives are the subject of active federal scheduling. Kava carries no comparable dependence profile, and a great many people choose kava specifically because of that. Read the section headers before you order, and ask if the answer is not obvious.
