Rooted In Sanity Kava Lounge

Wisconsin drinks more than almost anywhere in America, and Madison — a capital city that is also a Big Ten college town — is not the easy end of that. Rooted In Sanity is the city's answer, and until something else opens it is the only one of its kind: Madison's first and still only kava lounge, on Williamson Street in the Marquette neighbourhood, in the back of the SolEscape Healing Arts Building. You go down to the lower level and follow a teal line painted on the floor, which tells you most of what you need to know about the register the place operates in.

The offer is traditional kava served by the shell, housemade mocktails built on it, locally made teas and a full craft coffee menu, and the room is furnished deliberately for sitting: swinging chairs, couches, board games left out on the tables. Crucially the hours are bar hours rather than café hours — open until 10pm Monday and Wednesday through Thursday, 11pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, closed Tuesdays. That matters more than it sounds. Madison has genuinely good zero-proof drinks in a dozen bars and restaurants, but a bar is still a bar; the number of rooms in this city where you can be out at 9pm on a Saturday with no alcohol anywhere in the building is, as of 2026, essentially two.

Two things to be straight about. Kava is alcohol-free but it is psychoactive — mildly sedating, with a numbing effect on the tongue and a slow onset that catches first-timers out — so the staff will tell you to have one shell and wait rather than order three. And for anyone whose sobriety is abstinence-based rather than alcohol-specific, that distinction is worth sitting with before going. Taken on its own terms it is a genuine third place: Williamson Street puts I/O Arcade Bar and State Line Distillery within a few blocks, and the Marquette neighbourhood is the most walkable part of Madison's east side. It is also worth naming what Madison does not have, because Rooted In Sanity's significance depends on it. There is no alcohol-free cocktail bar here, no dry nightclub, and no second kava room. Wisconsin's first all-non-alcoholic bottle shop is twenty minutes west in Middleton and closes at 7pm. That leaves exactly two rooms in the metro where a person avoiding alcohol can be somewhere social in the evening with none in the building — this one, and a shop that shuts before dinner. For a city with as much genuinely good zero-proof bartending as Madison has, that is a striking gap, and it is why a basement kava lounge behind a healing-arts building carries more weight here than its size suggests.
