Shangri-la Fair Oaks

Shangri-la sits on Winding Way in Fair Oaks, a suburb about twenty minutes east of downtown Sacramento, and it maintains an alcohol-free list in two tiers: three drinks permanently, and additional ones during Dry January.

The permanent three — Pineapple Cooler, Coconut Grotto and Lemon Roots — matter more than the seasonal additions, and it is worth being clear why. The dominant pattern in this category is the January menu: a bar prints zero-proof drinks in the first week of the year, collects the coverage, and removes them by February. For someone doing a month-long challenge that works fine. For someone who has stopped drinking permanently, it means a venue's published list cannot be trusted in the spring, which is when the support actually matters. Three drinks kept all year is a smaller promise, honoured.

The Dry January expansion then adds Golden Earth, Bees Trees and non-alcoholic Stella Artois Liberté. Stocking an NA beer alongside built cocktails covers the other kind of non-drinker — the one who wants something familiar rather than something crafted.

The hours need reading carefully and are the main constraint: closed Monday and Tuesday, 5pm to 8:30pm Wednesday and Thursday, to 9:30pm Friday and Saturday, and Sunday only 11am to 2pm. That is a narrow set of windows, and the Sunday slot is brunch rather than evening.

Geographically it does something the rest of this guide cannot. Sacramento's alcohol-free depth is concentrated downtown and in Midtown; Fair Oaks is a substantial suburb with its own centre, and a venue there keeps a local from driving forty minutes round trip for a decent drink.

There is a driving argument specific to the suburbs as well. Fair Oaks is not walkable to anywhere, and anyone coming here is arriving by car and leaving by car. That is precisely the circumstance in which a bar with three real alcohol-free drinks changes the evening: the designated driver, who in most suburban bars gets a soda and an apology, can order something made properly and stay for the whole night rather than counting down. Suburban venues carry more of this weight than urban ones and get credited for it far less.
