Wildwood Kitchen & Bar sits at Pavilions, the upmarket shopping centre in the Arden-Arcade area east of downtown Sacramento. It is a neighbourhood restaurant rather than a destination bar, and its non-alcoholic drinks are better than that description suggests.

The blood orange margarita is built on CleanCo alcohol-free tequila. That single choice separates it from most restaurant mocktails. A margarita without tequila is citrus and sugar — pleasant, but not the drink, because the agave is what gives it its slightly vegetal, earthy backbone. A non-alcoholic tequila substitute keeps that note, and blood orange adds a bitterness that ordinary orange liqueur would not. The result is recognisably the same drink rather than an approximation of one.

The lychee Moscow mule takes the easier route, and sensibly so: a mule is ginger beer and lime with vodka contributing almost no flavour, making it one of the few classics that survives the substitution almost intact. Adding lychee gives it a floral sweetness that suits the format. Heineken 0.0 covers the third case — the guest who does not want a project, just a cold beer.

Between those three, Wildwood covers the range of what a non-drinker actually orders: something crafted, something familiar, something simple. Few restaurants manage all three.

The food side matters here too, more than at the bars in this guide. Wildwood is a full restaurant, which means the evening has an anchor other than drinking — courses arrive, the table talks about the meal, and the pace is set by the kitchen rather than by rounds. For anyone finding the early weeks of not drinking difficult in bars, restaurants with a real zero-proof list are the easiest reintroduction to going out, and a place stocking CleanCo tequila is doing more than the token Shirley Temple most restaurants consider sufficient.

The hours are broad and family-friendly — 11:30am to 9pm early in the week, to 11pm midweek and Saturday, from 10am at weekends for brunch. Being out at Pavilions rather than downtown, it serves a residential part of the metro that the K Street and Midtown venues do not reach.
