Snug

A snug, in a traditional Irish pub, is the small partitioned room off the main bar — historically where women, clergy and anyone wanting a private drink sat. Jim Arnoldt named his Irvington bar for it, and then built something that genuinely is one: 600 square feet at 210 South Audubon Road, in a unit that was previously a neighbourhood hair salon, opened on 2 January 2024 with Carey Shea and Timothy Barrett as co-owners. The Indianapolis Business Journal called it Irvington's cozy castle of Irish whiskey, and the whiskey is the specialism — more than ninety Irish bottlings on display, alongside Guinness and Kilkenny on tap and Irish soda bread from the kitchen.

A bar that specialised in whiskey to that degree could reasonably have ignored the non-drinking customer, and Snug has not. Local coverage lists it as a place with a real alcohol-free offer alongside the whiskey — a seasonal alcohol-free punch made in-house, plus non-alcoholic options kept on the back bar rather than fetched from a fridge on request. The scale of the room is part of why that works: with this few seats the bartender is talking to everyone, and ordering a non-alcoholic drink here is a conversation rather than a transaction.

It is worth being clear about what this is and is not. Snug is a whiskey bar, the whole premise is a spirits collection, and the alcohol-free list is one punch and a handful of options rather than a printed zero-proof menu of the sort you get at Ball & Biscuit or The Inferno Room. If you are looking for a room where alcohol is not the point, this is the wrong entry. If what you want is to sit with friends who are drinking whiskey in a warm, small, genuinely convivial neighbourhood pub and have something decent in your own glass, Snug does that better than most, and Irvington — a historic east-side district with its own high street — is worth the trip out. Closed Sundays; opens at 3pm on weekdays and midday on Saturday.
